What is a Pallet Truck?

pallet truck, which also goes by the name of pallet pump, pump truck, or jigger is a tool used to lift and move pallets.

The mechanics of the pallet truck see the front wheels mounted inside the end of the forks, when the hydraulic jack is raised, the forks are separated vertically from the front wheels, allowing for the load to be moved upward until it clears the floor. The pallet is only lifted so far off the floor to allow it to be moved.

There are many types of pallet truck – from the industry standard pallet truck to the electric pallet truck – all of which are stocked at Machine Depot

The manual pallet truck is a mechanical lifting device to lift heavy loads and usually work by a screw thread or hydraulic cylinder.

The electric pallet trucks, which are also known as electric pallet jacks, walkies, single or double pallet jacks, or power jack, are motorised to allow for heavier lifting and moving of pallets. Certain models have a platform for the operator to stand on while moving pallets.

The pramac electric pallet truck is generally moved by a throttle on the handle to move forward or in reverse and steered by swinging the handle in the intended direction. On some models there is a ‘dead man's switch’ which is used in the event that the machine needs to be stopped quickly. Other electric pallet models use a mechanism which is called `plugging` - this is where in the driver turns the throttle from forward to reverse (or vice-versa) to slow and stop the machine. The dead man's switch is used in emergencies only.
