Is training needed to be able to operate a Pallet Truck?

There is no doubt that pallet trucks can be incredibly useful for your business. They are affordable and easily accessible in smaller spaces compared to other alternatives such as forklift trucks. Their ability to improve productivity and efficiency has benefitted businesses all around the world.

Another thing that makes them ideal is that do not require any excessive training for your staff to be able to use them. However that doesn’t insinuate that pallet trucks require no training at all and there are some basic areas that need to be covered:

  • You must be wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment including steel toe cap boots.
  • You must be trained to carry out and pallet truck check to determine that it is in proper working order and that the wheels are free of objects such as string.
  • If handling equipment such as Weigh Scale Pallet trucks and High lifting Pallet trucks they should have received appropriate Manual Handling Training with heavy loads being lifted by 2 people.
  • Your staff must be trained on how the pallet trucks work and must know:

  1. How to load
  2. How to raise the contents off the ground.
  3. How to manoeuvre the pallet truck( depending on whether it is manual or electric)
  4. How to unload correctly
  5. And finally the correct way to return the truck to its designated storage area where forks must be parallel with a solid wall.

Although all of these procedures and checks are very basic, here at Machine Depot we believe that they are necessary to ensure that safety has been covered and that the pallet trucks themselves are being used to their full potential.
